The sculptural work of Michael Sailstorfer (*1979) deals with the history of certain objects, giving them a new form and function. He builds a tree house (“D-IBRB,” 2002) out of two old gliders; a solid house (“Heimatlied,” 2002) out of old trailer homes. Sailstorfer converts material and objects, making new sculptures out of their parts. One could characterize his artistic practice as a constructive interpretation of discarded things, which transforms old into new while also incorporating the process of transformation into the work. Leaving open the nostalgic potential of the past, he creates sculptures that perhaps look like the constructions of youthful dreams. The various developmental stages of the material are visible at all times. They form layers of narrative upon the built object, which combines form and function into a new entity.
